Approximately 1.5 hours. Coming soon.
Basic walk is 1.5 hours, add approximately 1 hour for the rock hunting and making a keepsake item from rocks experience.
Little Girls Point is a beautiful beach featuring many colorful gemstones and rocks, also surrounded by old growth forest on the shores of Lake Superior. This experience will feature a nature forest experience after climbing a moderately sloped trail to a forest above the beach followed by time on the beach. Expect 1/4 to 1/2 mile total walking broken up.
Alternatively, a guided nature experience only on the beach, which does not involve the steeper walk to the forest, is an option which can be discussed. In this case, a less steep walk down to the beach can also be taken.
The expanded 2 to 2.5 hour experience includes time for rock hunting with some guided rock identification and an optional project to make a keepsake refrigerator magnet with the rocks collected. Participants will be provided a small piece of a lake superior agate to include in their item. The magnets will be assembled and glued on site. Participants will be provided liquid non-toxic resin in a small container and a paint brush to coat their magnet at a later time which will takes 24 hours to dry.
Approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, 4 person maximum at an old copper mine site surrounded by forest. Participants will participate in a structured nature experience followed by time for metal detecting for copper. Two metal detectors and wands are available to be shared by participants. Safety glasses and gloves will be provided as well as a rock hammer to break the copper from basalt rock.
Metal detecting is done on old tailings or waste piles at an old copper mine site of basalt rocks which were discarded from the mines. The mines and mine buildings no longer exist, only the tailings piles of basalt remain. Participants will not be going into a mine or going underground.
This experience does include walking over piles of rock so appropriate footwear and the ability to safety navigate rough terrain is needed. Participants will be provided smaller pieces of tumbled copper which they can use combined with small basalt or other rocks found to make a keepsake refrigerator magnet which will be assembled and glued on site. Non-toxic liquid resin and a paint brush will be provided to coat the magnet at a later date which takes 24 hours to dry.
Sister walks and services are available for groups of one or two women with the guide. An additional guided sister kayaking excursion is also an option.
